NATURE TRAIL UPDATES:
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PRAIRIE BURN
Looks like we will need volunteers to help with the controlled burning of areas along the Longfellow Nature Trail. Such burning is done periodically to help encourage the growth of prairie plants and to reduce the build up of flammable dead plant materials. Depending on weather conditions, the burn will most probably be scheduled for some Saturday morning in March. Volunteers need not have had previous experience with controlled burns and should contact Jeff Schabilion (351-0872) for additional information concerning scheduling and preparations.

THE FURNITURE PROJECT
The Furniture Project, now housed at the Iowa City Landfill, will take care that extra furniture you may have and will be matched to local people in need. To donate your good used furniture, set up an appointment to drop off your furniture by calling the Landfill office (356-5185) at some point from from 7AM-4:30PM, Monday through Saturday. The landfill fee is waived. Your furniture may be hauled to the Landfill via a curbside pickup for collection rates of $10 for the first item and $5 for each additional item (call 356-5180). Pickup is on your scheduled garbage day, and the fee will be added to your next utility bill.

Adopt-a-Draina Grate Idea!
Do you know a storm sewer intake in your neighborhood that is in need of attention? You know, that metal grate along the curb of the street that accumulates sticks and leaves after every rain? Or perhaps you have a drain in your backyard or sideyard that becomes blocked with yard waste and can even cause flooding? If so, you can apply to "adopt" the intake and, in exchange for your care, you will receive free disposal of your yard waste for one year.
Here's the step-by-step process for becoming involved in this new program:
- Contact the City Engineering Office and let them know what intake you want to adopt. To do so, please stop by the Engineering Office in the Civic Center, or give Julie a call at 356-5140.
- If the intake is a part of the public storm sewer system and has not already been adopted, the Engineering Office will assign it to you.
- You will be given a sticker ($20 value) to mount on your container (35-gallon maximum) for free disposal of yard waste on your regular garbage day. In addition to the debris you remove from the adopted intake, you may place your own yard waste in this container.
- Your obligation is to simply keep the debris off your adopted intake!
The goal of this program is to keep the intakes clear so that it is less likely they will become blocked during heavy rains and then cause neighborhood flooding.

??? Continue or Drop the Caroling Party??? - by Rita Minsch
I would really appreciate input from the neighborhood to determine the future of the annual Longfellow Neighborhood caroling party. It's apparent that Friday nights should be avoided. Moving to a Saturday or Sunday will require an $80-$120 custodian fee if the party is held at Longfellow School. I'm not aware of other spaces in the neighborhood available for use. If you have an interest in the caroling party, continuing please let me know by calling Rita at 337-2807.
